The Plot (2024) is a South Korean crime thriller that follows Brain, a highly skilled assassin who specialises in arranging murders that look like ordinary accidents. Along with his team, consisting of an elderly man known as Uncle, a young woman, and a partner named Fatty, Brain carefully plans deaths that cannot be traced back to them.

The film opens with a fatal car crash involving a young woman, establishing the movie’s central theme of accidents versus deliberate acts. Shortly afterwards, Brain and his team execute a wealthy businessman through a perfectly orchestrated sequence of events involving a punctured tyre, a truck, and falling glass. While everyone believes it was an unfortunate accident, viewers learn that every detail was planned by Brain’s organisation.

Brain is extremely cautious and leaves nothing to chance. He even monitors his teammates through hidden microphones and constantly checks whether anyone has entered his apartment. However, beneath his calm exterior, he is still haunted by the death of his wife, who genuinely died in a car accident years earlier. His obsession with control has become a way of coping with that loss. The team soon accepts another assignment from a man who wants his disabled father killed so he can claim insurance money.

After observing the target for weeks, Brain develops a complicated plan involving railway wires, rain, balloons, and a wheelchair. Despite several setbacks, the assassination succeeds when the wheelchair comes into contact with an electrified wire, killing the old man instantly.

Things begin to fall apart immediately afterwards. During the operation, Fatty is struck by an out-of-control bus and dies from his injuries. At first, Brain believes this was no accident. When he later discovers that his apartment has been broken into and all his hidden money has been stolen, his suspicions grow even stronger.

Brain becomes convinced that someone is targeting him and his team. His attention turns to an insurance investigator named Cheng, who appears connected to several events surrounding the recent murder. Brain overhears conversations involving Cheng and the client who hired them, leading him to believe that Cheng is secretly manipulating everything from behind the scenes.

As his paranoia increases, Brain rents an apartment opposite Cheng’s home and begins spying on him. He installs microphones, tracks his movements, and records every conversation. At the same time, he starts suspecting his remaining teammates. When he sees evidence suggesting that the young woman may have received money from one of their clients, Brain concludes that she has betrayed the group. Without confirming the truth, he murders her using another carefully staged “accident.”

Shortly afterwards, the guilty client who arranged his father’s death commits suicide. Brain interprets this as another assassination organised by Cheng. When Uncle later falls from a building and is seriously injured, Brain becomes completely convinced that Cheng is eliminating everyone connected to the organisation.

The truth, however, is very different. As the story approaches its climax, Uncle finally reveals what really happened. Fatty’s death was not a murder at all. Because of Uncle’s Alzheimer’s disease, he accidentally released several balloons into traffic, distracting the bus driver and causing the crash that killed Fatty.

Uncle’s own fall from the building was also accidental and happened because he became confused after taking too much medication. Likewise, the client who hired them to kill his father took his own life because he could not live with the guilt of his actions. Cheng had nothing to do with any of these events. The conspiracy that Brain spent months investigating existed only in his imagination.

Unfortunately, Brain realises this truth too late. By then, he has already designed an elaborate plan to kill Cheng. Using mirrors and reflected sunlight, he intends to blind a driver and cause a fatal collision involving Cheng’s vehicle. As Brain rushes to stop the plan after learning the truth, a solar eclipse temporarily blocks the sunlight, preventing the accident.

However, when the eclipse ends moments later, the reflected light strikes a different driver, causing a crash that kills Cheng’s wife instead. Brain is devastated because he finally understands that Cheng was innocent all along.

In the film’s tragic ending, Cheng confronts Brain and fatally stabs him, demanding to know why he destroyed his life. Brain has no explanation because he now recognises that his paranoia and obsession with hidden conspiracies caused everything. As he sits dying, he thinks about his late wife and wonders if he will see her again. The movie ends with Brain facing the consequences of his actions and accepting the reality he spent so long denying.
